Brewer is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. He will be 6 years old this year in May. Brewer is like most corgis. He is very playful and loves to bark at anything that is out of the ordinary. Meaning if he see something out of place or he doesn’t think belongs, he will bark at whatever it is. He has very soulful eyes and sheds like nobody’s business. We usually get him groomed once a month to help keep the fur from flying every where. He enjoys playing outside and chasing the other dogs. I know that his breed is used for herding cattle or sheep, so he likes to stay true to his roots. He and Bandit don’t see eye-to-eye sometimes, so that’s who Brewer chooses to chase.
Brewer holds a special place in my heart because my son, Timothy, chose him. Timothy was sick for a long time and ended up passing away August 2022. Brewer was only 2 when that happened. He spent most of his puppy life with my son in his bedroom until the other dogs could adapt to him being added to the pack. Being around my son for that amount of time, he of course bonded with him. When my son passed away, he was carried out by ambulance to the hospital before Brewer could see him. He sat and waited by the back door for 3 days waiting for Timothy to come home. He wouldn’t eat much and it was hard watching him mourn and miss my son, almost as much as I do. He eventually started coming around and has now become my shadow. Wherever I go, there he is. Even if it’s in the bathroom, he has to be there. The only time he isn’t under my feet is when it’s bedtime. Since he grew up sleeping under my son’s desk, that is where he continues to go when it’s bedtime.
I decided to start using my son’s computer in his bedroom. Of course Brewer accompanies me, along with 3 or 4 others. The room would get cramped, so we decided to move the furniture around to allow more room. As we were moving the bed, we found one of my son’s socks. Brewer being the nosy boy he is went to sniff it and recognized my son’s scent. He looked up at me with the most sad, sorrowful look that almost broke my heart. (Damn sock.) I teared up and sat down to pet him. We didn’t get rid of the sock. Instead we put it under the desk with him so he would have my son’s scent around. Since we’ve adopted our other corgi, Winnie, we’ve had to keep it in a safe place so she wouldn’t tear it up.
Speaking of Winnie, we adopted her from the same breeder where we got Brewer. They share the same father but different mothers. We took him with us to meet his sister, as well as letting the breeder see how well he is being treated. He was very curious about her and didn’t seem too upset. The day we brought her home, Brewer would not leave her side nor would he let ANYONE come near his sister even myself and my husband. He would make sure to place himself between Winnie and whoever tried to approach her. He was a very good big brother. Now that she’s gotten older, he lets her do her own thing but still likes to play and rough house with her. I believe he has dubbed himself as the watch dog of the pack and will keep law and order whenever he deems it necessary.
